What steps will I need to take to place my loved one in a nursing home?

Select a nursing home that you want to place your loved one in and contact them to see if they have a room available.
Contact the Area Agency on Aging and request that a CARE assessment of your loved one be done to determine his/her appropriateness to be placed in a nursing home (Pine Village can assist you with this).

  • The Assessment is FREE of charge.

  • The Assessment is good for one year.

  • The Assessment will be required by almost all nursing homes.

Determine how payment will be made:

  • Out of personal financial resources (private pay)

  • From long-term care insurance

  • From State assistance (Medicaid)

(Be sure to ask if the nursing home you choose will accept residents on State Assistance Medicaid).

Will Medicare pay for a nursing home stay?

Medicare will not pay for a nursing home stay unless:

  • The nursing home is Medicare certified.

  • The doctor has ordered the resident to receive skilled services after they have had three overnight stays in a hospital and these services can be provided by the facility.

NOTE: Through the Progressive Health Care Alliance, Pine Village has staff onsite to provide skilled therapies, including physical, speech and occupational therapy.

What financial resources are available if my loved one’s financial resources are limited or non-existent?

For persons with limited or no financial resources, some assistance is available through the State of Kansas. This assistance will likely be Medicaid or Home and Community Based Services (HCBS). To determine whether one qualifies for this assistance and how one qualifies, contact the Social and Rehabilitative Services (SRS) office nearest you. This is critical as some assistance requires personal resources to be spent down to a certain level and other assistance requires being placed on a waiting list.

If you join us we will want to get to know you and to tell you about ourselves, so contact us to set up a tour at 620-345-2901.

What is meant by levels of care?

In healthcare and assisted living we have established base rates with levels of care. This system recognizes that each resident does not need the same level of care and allows nursing staff to continually assess the care required by the resident and is billed accordingly.

What is the evidence that Pine Village is a good placement for my loved one?

All nursing homes and retirement communities in the State are surveyed annually. Following are the results of Pine Village’s surveys for the past two years.

  • 2010 – 5 minor deficiencies

  • 2011 – 4 minor deficiencies in healthcare and 0 deficiencies for assisted living

Here are some other honors Pine Village has received:

  • LeadingAge Kansas Excellence in Social Accountability Award – 2012

  • 5 Star Rating by CMS in ‘Overall Quality’ – 2012

Our administrator often says the best way to determine good placement is to go to the facility and tour, noting:

  • What you smell.

  • What you see.

  • What you hear.

The most frequently received compliment is that Pine Village does not smell like a nursing home. We would love to have you for a tour sometime or just drop by for a cup of coffee and see (and smell) for yourself!
